Fern Resort is an all-inclusive all-season family resort on the shores of Lake Couchiching near Orillia, Ontario. My family and I spent the Victoria Day long weekend, as part of a media trip, and we experienced Fern Resort and all of its amenities. Although the stay was complimentary, the views and opinions shared here are my own.
The invitation to spend a weekend at Fern resort could not have come at a better time. We are on the cusp of buying a business and looking at a summer full of weekends spent at regattas around Ontario. We jumped at the chance to have a family getaway before the mayhem of summer caught up with us. I had been to the Lake Couchiching area before and I was eager to bring my family.
“The fun, fine food and hospitality you’ll experience at Fern have been developed into a solid tradition by four generations of our family (and there’s a fifth generation now growing up at the resort.) We, the Downings and Nelsons, have a genuine concern for the comfort and well-being of our guests. We hope you’ll truly enjoy your stay.”
Fern Resort makes planning your precious family vacation time worry free. Your stay at Fern Resort includes 3 meals a day and planned activities. You will also have use of all the fun gear at the docks and throughout the resort. We quickly found we had no need to leave the resort once we arrived. Every one of our vacation needs was met.
What is there to do at Fern Resort?
The beauty of spending your family vacation at Fern Resort is the number of activities available to you and your family. The planned programs are filled with activities to please all age groups. Spend the day with a group, drop in for an activity of interest to you, or stay by the pool all day. The choice is entirely up to you.
My 11-year-old daughter was hesitant at first. We asked her to try the youth program and promised to check on her. As promised, we peeked in on the group after about an hour and our daughter casually yelled to us “I am good!”. She happily followed the programs each day and made some “resort” friends.
The highlights of the weekend for our 11-year-old were…
- Climbing Wall
- Fern Buck Bingo
- Extreme Teeter Totter
- Indy Cart relay
- Zoo Tek visit
- Ping Pong and Pool
- Scavenger Hunts
- Blue Beaker visit
- Vertical Playground
- Frisbee Golf
- Ball Hockey
- Mini Putt
- Hot tubing
My husband, oldest daughter and I were able to try out some of the activities as well.
- Tea leaf reading (extra cost)
- Battle of the Sexes trivia game
- Ax throwing (I am a natural!)
- Jewelry making (extra cost)
- History walk
- Batting cage
Some activities we did on our own and others we did as a family. Everyone had a chance to do what they wanted.
What are the rooms like at Fern Resort?
There are 105 rooms and suites at Fern Resort. Our room was in the Hearthside Inn and we had a view of the pool and lake.
Our room came equipped with:
- balcony with views of the pool and lake
- wood burning fireplace
- bar fridge and coffee maker
- two double beds
- 3 drawer dresser
- a sitting area with a pull out couch
- 4 piece bathroom
- TV with DVD and VCR movie rentals available at front desk
- Air conditioning
- dinette table with 2 chairs
The room was clean and the beds were comfortable but in all honesty, we barely spent any time in the room. There was too much to do and explore.
How is the food at Fern Resort?
The meals are all included in your stay at Fern Resort. Most of our meals were full service in the Heritage Dining room. We had assigned seating and had the same table and servers for our stay. If you have little ones, the assigned seating means there’s a high chair and washcloth waiting and ready for every meal. Our servers were attentive, courteous and friendly. The choices at each meal made it hard to decide what to eat. We wanted it all!
The smart people at Fern Resort have a brilliant extra option for families at mealtime. You can opt to have your little ones dine buffet style before dinner service. You can get your kids favourite buffet items (pizza, salad, chicken nuggets, fries, etc…) and feed them quickly. The littles can then head over to the supervised Play Village, while the parents enjoy a quieter meal. Genius!
For lunch, we had to option to opt for the outdoor BBQ lunch. Hamburgers, salad, taco and poutine bars, sandwiches were all made to order. There was also a dessert bar. Needless to say, we did not go hungry. If we did need a little something extra, there are snacks available to buy between meals.
Is there a spa at Fern Resort?
The Saturday of our visit was a little overcast so my daughter and I thought it was the perfect time to visit the Spa at Fern Resort. I opted for the 30-minute massage and pedicure combo and my 15-year-old daughter chose a manicure… her first. Jeanna, the spa lady, fit us in last-minute and we are so happy she did. My massage was heavenly and Jeanna found some “angry” knotted spots and took care of them. My pedicure was done by her sister-in-law as Jeanna was taking care of my daughters first ever manicure. The manicure was so fun and suited my daughters’ personality perfectly. A perfect mother-daughter spa date was followed by tea readings. We both had our tea read at the resort adding to our perfect mother daughter day.
When we chatted with other guests we were always asked: “How many years have you been coming to Fern?”. Many were surprised to hear we were first-timers. Many of the guests we chatted with were returning guests. The longest we heard was 8 consecutive years. We heard from the general manager of a lady who visited for over 80 years!! We are hoping to be able to answer “This is our second visit.” very soon.
