What if I told you there was an easier and more relaxed way to get to Florida?
This week I flew down to Melbourne, Florida, and treated to both the Porter Airlines and Melbourne International Airport’s hospitality. Travelling between Billy Bishop airport right in downtown Toronto and Melbourne International Airport was convenient and efficient. From check-in, boarding, security, and customs it was one of the smoothest international traveling experiences. Porter and the Melbourne International Airport in Florida share the concierge approach to “flying refined” making this a perfect partnership. If you are looking to escape to the sun this winter, you MUST check out this new seasonal routing for Porter.
What does the Melbourne International Airport (MLB) offer?
The Melbourne International Airport is extremely proud to offer a concierge experience. “This airport is committed to growing international flights,” said Greg Donovan, A.A.E., airport executive director.
“We have found the perfect partner with Porter Airlines and provide them with the most technologically-advanced entry in the United States. We greet our passengers with sunshine, southern hospitality and a team committed to customer service.” Greg Donovan gave our group a warm welcome and was eager to share parts of the 7million dollar renovation taking place to the customs area at MLB. Paying attention to details and technology will have you at the beaches sooner and friendlier than you ever thought. All renovations will be done before the start of Porters new service (fingers crossed).

What can you do in the Melbourne, Florida area? LOTS!
The streets of the quaint historic downtown Melbourne are filled with restaurants, boutiques, cafes, shops, and surf shops. You may find a festival or event happening in the area such as the Independent Filmmaker’s Festival, Arts Festival, Aviation Day and Oktoberfest. Melbourne Main Street’s Friday Fest, 6-10pm every 2nd Friday. Bring your family for live music, vendors, food, the Kid Zone and it is FREE! You can check out my post about FREE Space Coast activities for families.
Melbourne boasts over 72 miles of unspoiled beaches where you can soak up the sun, surf, fish, or stroll.
Turtle season runs from May through October and they can be seen along the beaches during this time. If you WANT a guarantee to see turtles head to Melbourne as it is one of the world’s most populated locations for nesting turtles, partly due to the efforts of the Sea Turtle Preservation Society (STPS). STPS’s mission is to reduce disturbances and harassment of nesting sea turtles, and educating the public about the impact of lighting, beach debris, habitat destruction, and marine pollution.
Day trip destinations near Melbourne, Florida
Many destinations and adventures await you in and around Melbourne, Florida. Golf, Port Canaveral, Cape Canaveral, NASA, Kenedy Space Station, Eco-Tours, Brevard Zoo, Andretti Thrill Park, sailing charters, gater adventures and so much more are close by and ready to thrill and dazzle you! Of course, I could not leave out the big parks like Disney and Universal. Have the best of both worlds and stay near the beach and day trip to Disney or Universal.
The Port Canaveral, Exploration Tower is a unique interactive building with 7 floors of exhibits & observation decks, plus a cafe & gift shop. From the 7th-floor viewing deck, you can see, NASA, and have a bird’s eye view of Port Canaveral. On my recent visit, there was a great view of a recently returned SpaceX rocket!
Another great adventure awaits you at BG’s Eco Tour at Bayside Marina & Adventures. Enjoy a guided kayak or paddleboard tour of the Indian River Lagoon, home to brown and white pelicans, herons, egrets, osprey, bottle-nosed dolphin, manatee and much more. On our tour, we saw dolphins, manatee, eagles, white herons and even a little shark. The tour took about 1.5 hours and the kayak is easy for beginners to get the hang of.
For our next family vacation, we will definitely keep Porter, MLB and the Melbourne, Florida area in mind. There are memories to be made here.
