August 5th marks one year until the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. A great way to get your kids excited about the Olympic games is to encourage them to try some of the sports. Here is a link to a list of the summer sports. Why not hold your very own Olympics in your backyard? Recreate some of the games and have your kids try them out. Keep track of their times and scores. Next summer, just before the start of the Rio Summer Games, revisit your backyard Olympics. Compare the scores and times and celebrate the improvements your children (and yourself) have made.
We as a family will be closely watching the three athletes that will be participating in the twitter and Periscope chats mentioned below.
My eldest daughter has just started canoe and kayak racing this summer. The sport and lifestyle, on the water all summer (!), has already gotten a tight hold on her. Her very first regatta she did amazingly well. This is a sport that I know she will be enjoying for years to come. Perhaps a future kayak Olympian?
My eldest has always RAN everywhere, so it was no surprise when she joined her Track and Field team at school. Her coaches tried to narrow down the events she competes in, but as you can see from her ribbons there is no slowing her down. A future Olympic heptathelete perhaps? I just learned that a heptathlon is a track and field combined events contest made up of seven events. The name derives from the Greek hepta (seven) and athlon (contest). A competitor in a heptathlon is referred to as a heptathlete.
The youngest child is just starting to show an interest in sports. Starting gymnastics this summer was a highlight for her. A future trampoline Olympian gymnast perhaps? My question for the Olympian guests at this twitter party will be “How do I nurture my kiddos love of sport? I don’t want to over do it but I also don’t want them to ever lose interest in being active.”. Hope to see you there!!
