Have you noticed the great big tent set up at the RA Center in Ottawa this weekend? Wondering what is going on under it? The Shrine Circus is in town! I was lucky enough to be invited, along with my family, to see first hand what happens behind the scenes at the Circus. We were treated to the VIP treatment which included a backstage tour, a meet and greet with the animals, face painting and concessions.
We were greeted by Ringmaster/host/teacher Richard Curtis. Richard told us about how the circus is truly a family affair. Richard is married to Tarzan Zerbinis’ great great great niece and his daughter is not only the mini donut stand operator but she is in the show too! My girls face painter Gabriella was also in the show. Like any family they all come together to get what needs done.. done!
We started our tour in the big top tent. The big top, made in the European style, can sit up to 3,000 people!
The next stop was to visit the horses and tigers. Richard explained that they have spots along the route between Calgary and Montreal where they can stop to let the tigers be tigers and nothing else. The health and well being of these animals is clearly a priority to this family.
We were then treated to a close up visit with Marie and Shelly. Marie and Shelly are the pair of elephants that are the star of the circus. They are thought to be in their late 30’s. We were able to feed them some of their favorite treats, carrots and strawberries, and learn a little more about them. Did you know that spritzing an elephant behind the ear will cool them down more quickly than a complete dunk in a lake will? Did you know that the elephant trunk has over 100,000 muscles? Amazing animals. It is also amazing how these 3,000–5,000 kg animals are so gentle and quiet when they move.
It was time to say goodbye to Richard and get ready for the show. Settled in our seats with our lemonades, popcorn, snow cones we were ready for the show to begin. The show runs for about 3 hours with an intermission. We were treated to the largest exotic cat act in the world with 10 tigers, the TARZAN Zerbini performing Elephants, the Zerbini Liberty Equestrian Horses, astounding Trapeze & Aerial artistry, Juggling, Unicycles, Comedy, high flying Acrobatics, Classical Clowns, The Incredible Circus Wheel and more! I have to admit that the Russian Swing and the Circus Wheel caused my heart to pound a little. So amazing what these performers can do. We were also charmed by a 7 year old performer who is part of THE POEMA FAMILY act. For most of the show we were on the edge of our seat.
See you at the circus!
