I like to think of myself as the reluctant camper. I mean even my twitter “about me” says that I love not camping. My kids and husband love to dirt bike race and that usually means we need to camp out in order to be close to the race venue. Our racing club has 5 summer race weekends in the race schedule so in order for me to support my racing family, I need to camp. We tent it! In the Alberta foothills that could mean nightly dips of below zero weather. We are well set up though. Our fellow racers and RV and Toy Hauler camping friends jokingly call our 2 bedroom tent “The Condo”. It lacks nothing for comfort including heat!
Here is a picture of “The Condo”. See all the shoes left at the door? Our campsite is always where all the kids hang out… how does that happen? Maybe it is because we always have s’mores? Nah that can’t be it. I know it is because we are at every race and hubby helps coordinate the kids racers. That is the reason I endure the camping trips with possible sub zero weather. The family. Oh and the hardware. But mostly the family and the pride I feel when my daughters come in second in a boy dominated sport like dirt bike racing. Did I mention my eldest placed 3rd in Alberta? Proud momma moment.
We do have the best s’more making sticks around any of the campsites though and I did notice ours were a little ragged looking. With the May long weekend coming up and a new race season starting there are some things that need replacing or refreshing. Nothing major, like “The Condo”, just the staples of tent camping. Of course we headed to our go to weekend shopping spot, Canadian Tire, to pick up some needed camping gear. Even though it does not feel like it the May long weekend is in 3 weeks!
My husband noticed the camping section of the Canadian Tire flyer while having his morning coffee. We took this as a sign that it was time to head out and buy some gear.
Headed to Canadian Tire with the whole family on a Saturday is not out of the norm for us. Shopping for camping gear did get the girls a little more excited than usual. As usual my dear husband forgot what we went to Canadian Tire for…. The automotive section must have magnets for husbands.
We quickly found what we were looking, once we got hubby out of the Auto Parts Department, easily in the store. We managed to spend $51 and pick up a lot of the things we needed. First and foremost was the s’more sticks that needed replacing. We managed to get a deal on propane cylinders, rapid-dissolving toilet tissue (for the chemical toilet), a new water can, some lanterns for the kids (they always go missing!), bear bell for Miss Bella, fire starter sticks, package of glow sticks, seam seal and the BIG campfire marshmallows. All in all a great shopping trip, as always when we head to our Canadian Tire.
I do believe we are all set to go camping now. Of course we will need to do some bike readying but that will be on another day!
Have I forgotten to pick something up? Let me know what you buy to make camping more fun!
