Summer is the annual permission slip to be lazy. To do nothing and have it count for something. To lie in the grass and count the stars. To sit on a branch and study the clouds. — Regina Brett
I love this quote by Regina Brett, author, and inspirational speaker because it describes my whole feeling of summer. But that doesn’t mean we get lazy when it comes to reading and learning. I love to make sure both my girls are thinking and learning. Even during lazy summer days. I am lucky they both love to read and learn new things.
“DK Readers are an innovative range of early reading books that combine a highly visual approach with nonfiction narratives that children will want to read.”
In previous DK reviews, I mention how our favourite books are called “forever books”. The “forever book” title is reserved for books that have earned a prominent place on our bookshelf. Only the books we love, are read over and over again, create conversation, and inspire further investigating into a subject earn the “forever book” status. The DK Readers we were sent for review have earned the prime real estate spot on our “forever book” bookshelf.
Take a look at the magnificently redesigned DK Readers (with spangly foil treatment on the covers). DK Readers are available for different reading levels for ages 3-11. Miss T knew right away what level reader she was from school. Literacy experts have written and reviewed every DK Reader, making them a favourite with parents, schools, and librarians. I saw my child develop her reading skills and her love of reading with DK Readers.
Miss T read all five of her new DK Readers in an afternoon. I love that she is already familiar with them from school. Miss T excitedly read the “new to her” titles chosen for her. I wanted to make sure she understood what she read and tested her comprehension with a little chat. We talked about Martin Luther King, D-Day, horses, Egypt and snow dogs. All great subjects for a 9-year-old! I knew the “Secrets of the Mummies” was her favourite because she talked… and talked… about the book to anyone who would listen. I even caught her re-reading the book. SCORE!!
DK has generously teamed up with Shannon’s View from Here for a giveaway! The winner will choose 5 DK Readers for their little reader!
Good luck! Open to Canada only.
