What a treat it was to be in attendance, along with 16,000 inspired youth, at the 50th We Day celebrations in Ottawa, Ontario. A motivating day filled with rock stars, motivational speakers, world leaders and world changers.
“All of the students here have spent the last year earning their tickets,” said We Day co-founder Craig Kielburger. “Today we have chart-topping artists, world-renowned speakers and incredible youth on the stage motivating students in the audience by sharing the issues they are passionate about. We Day is a celebration of service but the real work starts when these young people go back to their classrooms and communities, empowered to make a difference. With over 5,260 schools and groups in Canada involved in our We Act program, these youth have been able to achieve remarkable change. Last year, Canadian schools and groups raised over $8,838,500 for local and global initiatives, collected over 1,234,130 pounds of food for our local food banks and logged more that 2,896,650 hours of volunteer service.”
You can not help but be inspired when you hear first hand accounts and see the actions of change. As the national co-title sponsor of We Day, Telus is proud to help inspire young leaders and support positive social change. Along with Free the Children, Telus helped develop We365. We365 is a free app that allows young people to use their phone for good and make a positive social change, every day of the year. The app also enables young people to track and verify their volunteer activities, learn about causes, take daily challenges and rally their friends around topics they are passionate about.
Craig Kielberger and Amanda Lindhout We Day 2015:Amanda’s memoir, A House in the Sky, is a New York Times bestseller and recounts her 460 days as a kidnapped hostage in Somalia. Amanda tells the story of her botched escape and how one womans compassion kept her strong enough to endure unimaginable hardships in one of the world’s poorest countries.
Craig Kielburger mentioned using your passion to help others. My daughter is in to all sports so when Craig suggested planning a teacher vs student sporting event and charging canned goods for the food bank as admission, I could see the excitement of the possible ignite in her eye. THAT is one of the best parts of We Day. The magic does not happen at We Day, although it is a fun show, it begins when the young leaders leave inspired and ready to act.
