St-Viateur Bagels Worth the Drive
I finally convinced hubby to take a drive to Montreal (we live west of Ottawa) for bagels. Yes bagels. A 2+ hour drive, in the dead of winter, for bagels. I see no issue with this. Hubs on the other hand took 10+ years to convince. I have been eating St-Viateur Bagels since I was young… like baby young. My parents first apartment, after I was born, was in the neighborhood of this world famous bagel joint.
St-Viateur Bagels The Experience
When you hear “Montreal Style bagels”, St-Viateur Bagels is what they are referring to. While living in Calgary I had a friend UPS me a dozen bagels. As delicious as they were something was missing. No offense to UPS but the blast of hot, dry, bagel scented air when you enter the bakery was not there when I opened my parcel. That is when I realized it was the whole experience that I loved and remembered.
St-Viateur Bagels The Childhood Memories
I can not remember the last time I was in St-Viateur Bagels but as soon as I set foot in the shop I felt like I had been there yesterday. NOTHING had changed. My childhood memory was conserved in this bakery. The wood stove, boiling pot of sugar water, all the famous people on the wall, the bagel rolling station all looked the same to my adult eyes as to my childhood memories.
Funny side note. Hubs was talking to the cashier saying “We drove all the way from Ottawa for my wife to have these bagels.”. Without missing a beat she replied with “Ottawa? I drive there for the best burgers in the world!!”. Ha! I win! Everyone has a food worth the drive.
